The Venice Carnival was always one of the most popular feasts in the city, and records documenting this event go back as far as the eleventh century and by the eighteenth century it was known all over Europe.
However, in 1769 when the Republic fell the vitality of Venice was temporarily lost, and the tradition of Carnival abandoned. In 1980 the Venice Carnival was revived as a community and tourist festival.
Nowadays it is characterized by its magnificent masquerades, masked balls and feasts. The whole town is transformed into a vast theatre, full of music, dance and festivities. The city explodes with fun and laughter and huge festive crowds fill the salon of Piazza San Marco and hundreds of other squares in the city.
This is Carnival: A stimulating experience to suit everyone’s taste.

Each year , on the first Sunday in September the Venetians throng the banks of the Grand Canal to see the Regata Storica. The Historical Regatta is one of the festival in Venice which provides entertainment both for the Venetians and for all those who come from near and far to see this colorful event.

The origin of this annual exhibition may be safely referred back to the middle of the thirteenth century. The first Regatta is recorded in 1315.

Today the event begins with a nod to its origins. First, there is the procession of gilded boats – including the impressive 12-oared gondola that carries the Doge and the Queen of Cyprus. The fanciful flotilla of gondolas that follows features period-costumed aristocrats, regal ladies, and rowers dressed in the lush liveries of noble families. An unforgettable sight and a true reconstruction of the glorious past of one of the most powerful and influential Maritime Republics in the Mediterranean.

Ultimately, there are four racing competitions divided in terms of age and type of craft: pupparini (for youngsters), mascarete (rowed by women) and caorline. The best known and most exciting of these is the “Campioni su Gondolini” race, where a series of small, sporting gondolas fly down the Grand Canal to the finishing line at the famous “machina”, the spectacular floating stage located in front of the Ca’Foscari palace.

Exhibition Opens on October 10th

On Saturday 10th October the exhibition “Prendergast in Italy” opens at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and will be on view through January 03rd 2010, the exhibition then travels to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas (February 14–May 9, 2010).

It is the first exhibition dedicated entirely to the watercolours, monotypes, and oil paintings by Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924). Featuring over sixty views of Venice, Rome, Siena, and Capri, “Prendergast in Italy” also includes the artist’s personal sketchbooks, letters, photographs, and guidebooks from his two trips to Italy.

Maurice Prendergast went to Europe from Boston in 1898 spending part of the summer in Venice and returning for the spring and summer 1899.

Variously labelled as Impressionist, Postimpressionist and Modernist, Prendergast’s art especially at this early stage of his career, is unique. While offering homage to the city’s past, Prendergast pictorially brought the art and culture of Venice in the twentieth century. As one critic noted in 1900, “He makes the spectator realize the Venice of today”
He chose watercolour as his primary medium. He captured Venice’s unique configuration in the liquidity of that medium – the constant flow of his coloured washes emulating the watery movement of the canals and lagoons. He produced about sixty Venetian watercolours and he concentrated especially upon Piazza San Marco.
“Prendergast in Italy” is organized by Williams College Museum of Art in partnership with the Terra Foundation for American Art.
