THE MONUMENTAL VENICE PACKAGE

This package includes:

  • Candlelit dinner at the Restaurant “La Cupola” . ( 3 course menu, drinks not included )

The two Moors hammering the hours atop this Renaissance clock tower are one of the most characteristic Venetian scenes. The clock not only tells the time but also is a boon to the astrologer: It matches the signs of the zodiac with the position of the sun. The Moors originally represented two European shepherds, but after having been reproduced in bronze, they’ve grown darker with the passing of time. As a consequence, they came to be called Moors by the Venetians. The internal machinery is very curious. On certain religious anniversaries, and at a certain hour, a door flies open, and the three kings of the East – Melchior, Balthazar, and Caspar – make their appearance, cross over and vanish within another door on the opposite side.

Guided tours in English: at 09.00, 10.00 and 11.00 AM on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and at 13.00, 14.00 and 15.00 PM on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Venice Clock Tower tour lasts around 50 minutes.

Please note that the inside of the building is cramped, and the stairs between the five levels are both narrow and steep. For this reason, children under the age of twelve are not permitted to take the tour, neither are people of reduced mobility. Furthermore, the tour is not recommended should you be pregnant, or suffer from vertigo, claustrophobia or cardio-vascular complications.
